An Insight into Brain Tumour Surgery

Brain tumours are often treated with surgery. Brain tumour surgery is done only if the tumour is located in an accessible place for operation. Through the surgery, the surgeon removes part of the brain tumour as much as possible. There are many cases where tumours are small, they are easy to remove completely from surrounding brain tissues. Complete surgical removal is possible only in such cases. But in other cases, if tumours are located near sensitive areas in the brain, then removing it through surgery is risky. In such a situation the doctor may remove the possible part and treat the rest with nuclear medicine.

Even removing a small part of the tumour helps to reduce the symptoms of the brain tumour. Surgery does carry some risk such as infection and internal bleeding. Also, a surgery performed to remove a brain tumour located near eye nerves may carry a risk of vision loss.

Minimally Invasive Scarless Brain Tumour Surgery

This is also called awake brain surgery. The procedure is offered at very few hospitals in the country. People who are not eligible for traditional surgery can get help with this. It involves minimum risks of serious complications. People who undergo brain tumour surgery through these advanced techniques get reduced hospital stays and shorter recovery times. The mortality rate is lower in this approach.

Whatever be the surgical approach the doctors used; the patients have to go under nuclear medicine for a while post the surgery. This is done to reduce the chances of recurrence. They are also used for diagnosis purposes such as brain imaging.
