Prostate Cancer Diagnosis with PET CT Scan

The prostate is a small gland of the endocrine system present in men which produce seminal fluid to transport the sperm. Cancer can occur to this gland and it is one of the most common type of cancer found in men aged over the 50s. If diagnosed early and proper prostate cancer treatment is given, the patient can get a cure.

Usually, prostate cancer grows very slowly at its early stage and stays confined within the prostate gland. At that point, it may not harm the patient severely. But there are many types of prostate cancer which grows aggressively and may spread very quickly. Thus, detection is very important, and PET-CT Scan is the new technological advancement in prostate cancer diagnosis process.

This scan can not only detect cancer but also find out the exact location and widespread. It can also detect recurring of prostate cancer spread after giving initial treatment and if it may reach to other organs or not. PET-CT Scan can detect prostate cancer earlier than any CT scan or MRI scan. Knowing about the cancer growth, location, and other details accurately, doctors can give a more precise & selective treatment.

Prostate cancer treatment may include surgery, cryotherapy or radiation which are usually given after initial diagnosis. There are many cases when cancer reoccurring comes back. To avoid such circumstances, patients are recommended to go for periodic PSA blood test. Basically, increased PSA level indicates that cancer has returned most probably. But PSA test cannot tell about the location of cancer which is important for recurring prostate cancer treatment. PET or positron emission tomography combines with CT offers improved quality images and help to indicate the location of cancer growth too. It employs radioactive elements to trace the targeted tissues.
